"Now Look Your Prettiest / For The Amateur Photographers Are After You"
(Ottawa Evening Journal, Dec 11, 1894.)

Popular photography was still in its infancy when a group of enthusiasts formed the Camera Club of Ottawa in 1894. The organizers set as their objective "...to study and promote the art of photography in all its branches". Although it was a primitive art form at the time, club members soon gained competence and recognition in international salon competition. Today, we maintain that objective. We have a small gallery of our historical images of the Camera Club of Ottawa.

Today we strive to offer a variety of programs from regular meetings, competitions, workshops, field-trips and informal outings, to satisfy as many interests in photography as possible.

Workshops and outings usually consist of a small group of members, led either by another Club member or a local professional photographer, in topics such as portraiture, nature photography, film and print processing, framing and mounting, and digital techniques.  A special series of informal workshops is held each year for beginners.   Outings and field trips are designed to provide social as well as technical benefits.

Competitions are organized into colour slides or B&W prints, or colour prints, by three categories:  "Novice", "Intermediate", or "Advanced".   An invited judge or panel of judges critiques each entry, and makes awards ("Award of Excellence" or "Honourable Mention") to deserving entries as appropriate.    Points are accumulated, based on the level of awards achieved, to determine the year-end trophy winners.   These trophies are distributed at the annual banquet in May.

The Club participates in an annual spring " Inter-club" competition a local event since 1984 between ourselves, the RA Photo Club, Orleans Camera Club, and Club de Photo Polarisé de l'Outaouais Inc.
